Please, please, please let us age in peace
Ageing is like a surprise party thrown by Mother Nature (other than menopause) – you never quite know what to expect! While we’re on the hunt for the fountain of youth, the reality is that most “anti-ageing” products are just a cunning disguise in a bottle, with a dash of movie magic and a hint of self-care thrown in.
Moving on in years is like levelling up in a video game – you gain some perks but also unlock some unexpected challenges! One of the perks of aging is collecting a treasure trove of wacky experiences and the superpower to handle all sorts of weird situations. As we get older, we get more street-smart, but let’s not forget that there’s no universal cheat code for this game called life.
Outside of the Vogues and Hellos of the world, there’s this relentless societal pressure to cling to youth, leaving us with comments like “You look like you’ve just finished high school, not like you’re in your 50s” flooding social media. But hey, let’s get real for a moment – true fulfilment doesn’t come from a wrinkle-free facade.
We’re talking about racking up some serious wins here, like securing that sweet financial independence, conquering the elusive career ladder, soaking up all that juicy knowledge, spreading kindness like confetti, and growing a social circle that’s bigger than a fan club for cat memes.
So with that I’ll reuse the words from Sabrina Carpenter’s latest smash hit – “Please please please” let us age in peace. Stop judging people because of their age or how they age. It’s pointless, shallow, and is an utter waste of time. Age is not a measure of worth or value, and it’s important to recognise and respect the individual journey of each person. Let’s focus on the richness of life experiences, the depth of character, and the unique stories that come with different stages of life. Instead of fixating on surface-level appearances, let’s appreciate the depth and strength that come with aging gracefully.

More birds (its summer!)
I’ve had countless encounters with the elusive pied wagtail, though I never bothered to learn its official title. Blame it on the giant fuchsia bush we inherited with the house – it was practically a beast. Taming that thing was an epic saga, and as a result, I’ve sworn off fuchsias for life in my garden.

And the magnificent great blue heron, a proud resident of North America and the Galapagos Islands. Adorned with its stunning blue hues and whiskery feathers, it exudes a distinguished air, reminiscent of a venerable old gentleman.

Considering the UK mainland is located in the middle of an ocean, sea birds abound, and I’d like to begin with this illustration of gannets alongside some sea thrift on a cliff. The seas around our islands are indisputably the best place in the world to observe northern gannets, as over half of the world’s population nests here.

Exploring the cute
I began capturing sketches of adorable subjects such as the lovely hedgehog. In my garden, sightings of them are quite rare, but we were fortunate enough to encounter one a couple of weeks ago. They are incredibly tiny and spiky, with the most captivating eyes. Every checkbox is ticked for them to be called cute!

And if you’re searching for that heartwarming, delightful experience, the irresistibly charming red pandas are the perfect choice. They hold a special place in my daughter’s heart, and we simply can’t resist visiting them at the Cotswolds wildlife park.

Monogamous, mated for life, and colourful – no, we’re not talking about me! Instead, we’re talking about these stunning and adorable love birds native to sub-Saharan Africa. Though having a partner for life is the dream, reality often has other plans.

When you mention the largest rodent, it’s easy to envision something unappealing, but just wait until you lay your eyes on the Capybaras – they’re an absolute delight! Indigenous to South America, these adorable creatures can also be spotted relaxing in hot springs in Japan, or strolling around zoos in North America.

Love, war and wisdom as the Greeks would have it
I wanted to capture the essence of Greek gods and goddesses as if they were living among the beauty of nature, seamlessly blending in with their surroundings. To begin with, I undertook the task of depicting the Greek goddess Aphrodite, the Olympian embodiment of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation. A dove, apple, scallop shell (background of the illustration is a scalloped pattern), and mirror (just the frame around the illustration) are just some of the symbolic elements that adorn her divine presence.

A picnic at WaterPerry Gardens

Waterperry gardens at this time of the year are a sight to behold! The enchanting water lilies, the graceful dragonflies, the charming greenhouse, and the abundant fruit trees create a paradise of vibrant greenery that is utterly breathtaking. It’s a place where one can momentarily escape reality and revel in the pure beauty of nature. Our visit included a delightful picnic, some engrossing books, and a lively card game under the warm sunshine. If you haven’t experienced this haven, I urge you to do so. The plant nursery and the events at the open-air auditorium only add to the allure of this magical place.

A Family Affair – Netflix
Starring Joey King, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, and Kathy Bates, this romcom is an easy watch. It follows film star Chris Cole, who falls for an older woman (Nicole Kidman), leading to awkwardness as she is the mother of his assistant, Joey King. Despite any criticism, I enjoyed the film because it portrays women in a positive light, emphasising that a woman’s age is just a number. One of my favourite dialogues is when Nicole Kidman asks her mother-in-law, “Do you ever feel irrelevant?” to which she confidently responds, “No, I find myself absolutely fascinating!” If only we could spread that level of confidence to every woman, we would all be living our best lives!
Quiet Place Day one – Vue
Sometimes you just need a bit of horror to jolt you awake and escape from the daily grind, or maybe to develop a newfound appreciation for reality. The latest instalment in the Quiet Place series reveals how “it all began,” as ultra-sensitive hearing aliens wreak havoc on Earth. And where better to set this chaos than in the bustling city of New York? Lupita N plays a terminal cancer patient with her trusty “guide cat,” caught in the middle of the chaos, while Joseph Quinn, a law student from Kent, teams up with Lupita to either survive or become alien prey. With a few spine-tingling moments, surreal special effects, and the remarkable fact that the movie makes an impact with less than half the usual Hollywood decibels, it’s definitely worth a watch!
The Jetty – BBC one
Jenna Coleman delivers a powerful performance as DC Manning in this intense drama centered around a girl’s disappearance in Lancashire. The show delves into sensitive topics such as consent, misguided youth, and abuse. If you’re drawn to shows with compelling plots and strong female leads, this is a must-watch.
Wicked – Musical at Apollo Theatre, London
The retelling of the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the East from the Wizard of Oz, from the perspective of Glinda the Good was a captivating experience. The show challenges societal preconceptions of good and evil, ultimately highlighting the subjective nature of these concepts. While Glinda exudes charm and wins people over, she also complies with an engagement to the Prince and conceals the Wizard’s atrocities. Conversely, Elphaba, an emerald green outcast, advocates for animals and causes upheaval in the city of Oz.
The Constituent – Old Vic
Starring James Corden and Ana Maxwell Martin, this powerful political drama runs for an hour and a half. Despite its shorter duration, it delivers a significant impact and makes a bold statement, perfectly reflecting the current social climate. The play delves into the complex relationship between Ana Maxwell’s character, Monica, an MP and backbencher, and Corden’s character, Alec, a struggling ex-military dealing with PTSD and a challenging divorce. It raises thought-provoking questions about the true nature of good and evil, the responsibilities of MPs and politicians to their constituents, the deep flaws in our social services system, and the individuals who are overlooked by it. Currently running at the Old Vic, this enthralling production comes highly recommended for an unforgettable evening.
Twelfth Night – Shakespeare at the Oxford Castle
Based on the Bard’s manuscript, this performance by the Wild Goose Theatre is a delightful showcase in the serene yet grand courtyard of the Oxford Castle. The characters exuberantly dance, sing, and display passionate yearning for their desired affections. It presents a lighthearted love triangle filled with joyful songs and captivating music. If you’re seeking an uplifting evening to unwind, this is the perfect performance to experience. Remember to grab a blanket from the counter, as it promises to be a memorable evening. Catch it until the 27th of July.
Recipe for a summer drink
Strawberry Lemonade is our household drink for summer. I recommend starting by boiling a litre of water with around 110g of caster sugar. Let it cool in the fridge while you mash the fruit. This approach works well for me, especially with a 9-5 work schedule, as it allows me to prepare the base in the morning and finish the lemonade just before dinner.
What really gives the drink the tang factor is the precise combination of 500g of strawberries, juice of 4 lemons and 1 lime processed in a food processor and strained through a sieve or muslin cloth to extract the puree. This vibrant puree is then mixed with the sugar water, which should be suitably cooled by this stage. Experimenting with raspberries, I found that 250g of raspberries and 250g of strawberries create an even sharper taste and a homemade version of pink lemonade.
Finish it off by generously topping it with ice. Not only is this a delightful beverage, but it also serves as an excellent palate cleanser. After a heavy meal, this refreshing drink will certainly rejuvenate your senses.
To enjoy while it lasts
Warm summer days, blossoms in the garden, the fading age of innocence giving way to self-awareness – these are fleeting moments to be savoured with passion. Embracing the present is a practice we often neglect, yet it holds the power to heal and create enduring memories.
So with that in mind, we’ve scheduled delightful picnics in the nearby park, an exhilarating trip to the city to enjoy a captivating musical, and engaging in intense badminton matches in the garden, where the shuttlecock often ventures into our neighbour’s lush lawn. Although seemingly modest, these simple yet joyful experiences entwined together form the essence of an unforgettable summer.
